Irrigation project to boost climate-resilient farming in Kaptagat

Farmers in Kaptagat Ward, Uasin Gishu County, are set to benefit from the Ainet Community Irrigation Project, a climate-resilience initiative that will deliver improved water access and higher agricultural productivity.

The project, a joint effort between the Uasin Gishu County Government and the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) programme, will cover a radius of approximately 12 kilometres.

The irrigation project includes the installation of 12,000 drip irrigation lines and the development of 500 springs to support year-round farming.

Speaking during a site inspection visit, Mercy Kemboi from the County Coordination Unit hailed the initiative as a timely investment that would enable the surrounding community to effectively respond to challenges brought about by climate change.

“This will be in addition to promoting sustainable water use and enabling farmers to maintain agriculture and livestock production despite changing weather patterns,” added Kemboi.

Speaking at the same event, County Principal Irrigation Engineer Kipronoh Mare echoed the same sentiments.

He stressed, “The irrigation infrastructure will promote efficient water utilisation and increase agricultural productivity among farmers in the area.”

Area ward Administrator, Clinton Munai encouraged the locals to appreciate and fully embrace such government funded project

“Community participation and ownership are essential in ensuring the sustainability of government initiatives,” urged Munai.

The officials expect the Ainet Community Irrigation Project to enhance food security, raise farm yields, and improve livelihoods for residents of Kaptagat Ward.

The initiative falls under Nguzo 7 of Governor Jonathan Chelilim Bii’s development agenda, which prioritises sustainable development, improved livelihoods, and strengthened climate resilience.
