Nanyuki traders in Laikipia County are set to move into a new state-of-the-art modern market constructed by the government at a cost of Sh360 million.
The facility, which is currently 95 percent complete, is expected to accommodate more than 1,000 traders once completed in December this year.
Traders who are set to benefit from the project have welcomed the project, saying the modern facility will provide them with a more dignified and conducive working environment compared to where they are currently in, whose structures are in a dilapidated state.
Nanyuki Old Market chairman said that the project was one of a kind in the region, noting it is a major boost for traders and a long-lasting facility that will benefit even the future generations.
“This is the very first project we have benefitted from the government since we got independence, and we are proud that we have an ultramodern market that is well organized, clean, and attractive to the new generation,” said Mwangi.
The facility will feature 720 stalls, 20 shops, a lactation room, and other social amenities designed to improve the welfare of traders and customers.
“The project is well designed, and especially the water disconnection from local water companies will become a thing of the past. It’s also going to be solarized, hence boosting the 24/7-hour economy,” he added.
The project, which was launched in March 2024, was lauded by residents, revealing that it had also created hundreds of employment opportunities for local residents during its construction.
“It has created job opportunities. Since the project began, we have been working here and supporting our families. We are grateful to the President,” said Consolata Wanjiru, one of the workers in the construction site of the Nanyuki market.
For Mohamed Muriuki , the jobs generated by the project have provided young people with a source of income and helped dissuade them from drugs and substance abuse.
