At least 2,500 residents of Kaunguni Sublocation in Makindu Sub-County have received title deeds, ending a 63-year wait for secure documentation of their land ownership.
Kibwezi West Member of Parliament Mwengi Mutuse, who issued the title deeds at Kaunguni Market on Thursday, urged the beneficiaries to use the documents to improve their livelihoods and access financial opportunities.
Mutuse said residents could use their title deeds as security to obtain loans from financial institutions to educate their children, establish businesses and invest in income-generating activities.
“You can use the title deeds to secure a loan from banks. This will enable you to educate your children and also initiate an income-generating project or business in order to combat poverty and improve your living standards,” Mutuse said.
He said the issuance of the title deeds was part of ongoing efforts to address longstanding land tenure challenges in Makueni County.
Mutuse said title deeds had also been issued to residents of the Kinyoo Settlement Scheme in Emali and Syumile B, while land surveys were ongoing in Kathyaka and Kikumbulyu to facilitate the titling process.
He thanked President William Ruto for supporting initiatives aimed at improving the livelihoods of residents and commended the national government for implementing development projects in the county.
He cited affordable housing projects, markets, roads and dams among the initiatives being undertaken in various parts of Makueni.
Mutuse also urged residents to support the President in the 2027 General Election, saying the administration had demonstrated commitment to development.
“Do you want politics or development? We should vote for the President to lead up to 2032,” he said.
His remarks came amid political mobilisation ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking at the same event, Makueni County Land Registrar Roseline Soo advised beneficiaries to present their national identification cards and letters from their respective assistant chiefs when collecting their title deeds.
She urged residents to keep the documents safely, noting that title deeds are important records of land ownership.
The issuance of the documents is expected to give beneficiaries greater security of tenure and enable them to transact on their land more easily, subject to the applicable laws and regulations.
Later, Mutuse commissioned the Ndovoini Sublocation Assistant Chief’s Office, which was constructed through the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) at a cost of Sh1.9 million.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Makindu Sub-County Deputy County Commissioner Hellen Chege thanked the MP for supporting the construction of the office.
Chege said the facility would provide the assistant chief with a conducive working environment and enable residents to access government services closer to their homes.
