The Narok Director of Education Apollo Apuko has called on school Boards of Management (BoM) to offer good leadership in their respective schools in a bid to foster both academic and infrastructure development.
Apuko, who spoke at Ololulunga boys’ secondary school during the inauguration of new Narok South Sub County BoM members, challenged the members to leave a mark in the schools they lead.
He pointed out that the members had power to run the schools they lead in the direction that they wanted, saying the school’s performance largely depends on the management.
“You must stand firm to ensure the success of your schools. Do not be intimidated by anyone and never engage in illegal deals that will land you in trouble,” he warned.
The director observed that the major challenge facing education in the county was a large number of out of school children, teenage pregnancies, Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and poor performance in national examinations.
“I expect you to address these issues. Follow-up after children who fail to report to school and strengthen the guidance and counselling sessions so as to minimize teenage pregnancies and FGM,” said Apuko.
He challenged the new team to uphold dignity and become role models to the young learners, who look upon them for advice and counsel.
On his part, the Narok County Executive for Education Robert Simotwo, said both the national and county governments had invested heavily on education, hence the need for BoMs to ensure smooth learning in their respective schools.
“Guide the young learners by holding counseling sessions to teach them morals, even as you encourage them to work hard in their studies,” he said.
He observed that many learners engage in criminal activities like burning of schools, while participating in strikes, simply for lack of wise counsel from their seniors.
“With the new BoM in place, we expect better results both in academics and extra-curricular activities,” he underscored.
In Kenya BoM members serve for a renewable term of three years, which can run up to a maximum period of six years.
