Bomet Traders Hike Prices

Traders in Bomet County have been blamed for increasing prices of essential goods following the outbreak of covid-19 in the country.

The concerns were raised by a section of consumers who said prices of goods such as sugar, cooking oils and maize flour have increased by over 20 per cent in Bomet town.

The trend was expected by Government and President Uhuru Kenyatta had issued strong warning to traders.

But the temptation has got a better part of the traders and now consumers have to pay exorbitant prices on essential goods which many suspect are being hoarded to create artificial shortage.

Pauline Tuimising who spoke to KNA at Bomet market said Government should crack the whip on such traders saying the covid-19 pandemic was only a scapegoat by traders to advance personal greed.

She said the crisis has hit everyone hard and that the people have to be each other’s keepers with understanding that many economic opportunities were inaccessible due to precautions taken to combat covid-19.

She urged the trade department of Bomet County to investigate the matter and revoke permits of businesses found culpable.
