CBO launches war against FGM in Tana River

A Community Based Organisation (CBO) chairperson Ms. Sadia Hussein has said cases of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) were rampant among the pastoralist community in Tana River County hence, need to be curbed.

Speaking to the press in Hola today, Ms. Hussein said her CBO which is fighting against FGM has helped women practicing FGM to get two goats that would support them earn income after abandoning female circumcision.

She said, majority of those practicing FGM were old women who requested for assistance to earn their living after quitting cutting young girls adding that, per cut they were charging Sh300.

She also said her Organisation has intensified the campaign against FGM practice in Tana River Sub County in areas such as Wayu, Chifiri, Waldena and Kalkacha where about 20 old women have abandoned the practice which has been associated with negative health effects on those who have undergone the cut.

She further said that for the war against FGM to succeed by 2022, Chiefs and their Assistants must be at the front-line in their areas of administration because many cases were taking place but were not reported and again, Chiefs were reluctant to take action against the culprits for fear of being blamed by local communities that they were against cultural practices.
