A Project Management Committee (PMC) has declined to approve payment to a contractor saying he did shoddy work on the Ajigo-Aila Road in Bondo sub-County, Siaya County.
The PMC chairman, Josiah Sellanga, said the contractor, Kawala Electronic Company, had approached the Committee to approve payment of sh. 2.4 million, from the County Government of Siaya.
The PMC members said they could not approve the payment because the 5.2 km road in North Sakwa Ward was supposed to be graveled to the recommended standard, yet it was impassable even before the contractor left the site.
“The road is full of mud and pools of stagnant water, with the current rains, rendering it impassable to motorists and even motorcycle riders,” said Mr. Sellanga.
The PMC chairman said the road joins Ajigo Market and the main road to East Alego Ward, therefore vital for trade, but its current state leaves traders stranded with goods or forced to use longer routes.
Area MCA Ms. Lorna Adida, acknowledged the road was impassable, but said she would establish if the County Roads Inspector did inspection and cleared the contractor for payment or not.
