County government disburses term two bursaries cheques worth Sh4.1 million

Nyeri county government has disbursed bursary cheques worth Sh 4.1 million to 215 secondary school students from needy backgrounds, through the Governor’s Scholarship Program.

The initiative, which is spearheaded by the county government, targets 60 secondary school students annually where each of the beneficiaries is awarded a four-year full secondary school scholarship. The cheques are meant to cater for the student’s school fees and upkeep when learning resumes on Monday for Term 2.

Speaking during the event, Nyeri Deputy Governor Warui Kinaniri, reiterated the county’s steadfast commitment to supporting education and empowering the youth through education. He further urged the beneficiaries to take advantage of the county’s investment in their future and make the efforts count by excelling in their studies.

“The county government remains committed to supporting you to attain the highest level of education. I therefore urge you to set goals and work towards achieving your dreams,” said Kinaniri, encouraging the students to remain resilient and committed to their education despite their financial challenges.

Every year, the Nyeri Governor, Dr Mutahi Kahiga, spends Sh7 million on the program which was initiated in 2018 with the aim of creating an adequate pool of human resource capital that the governor said would drive and elevate the county’s economy.

Among the beneficiaries was Victor Wachira, an alumnus of Kagumo Boys High School, who scored an impressive Grade A of 83 points in the 2022 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examinations. Wachira thanked the county government for its continued support and encouraged the current beneficiaries to stay focused.

“On behalf of Cohort 3, I would like to extend our gratitude to the governor for making a huge difference in our lives by giving us a chance to complete our education. To the students, I urge you to identify your strengths and the subjects you perform poorly in so you can work on them. Don’t imitate your friends, because imitation is a limitation. Be yourself,” advised Wachira.
