Five Community-Based Organisations (CBOs) in Rurii, Wamumu Ward, Kirinyaga County, will benefit from a Sh500,000 empowerment kitty under the Women Economic Empowerment and Social Welfare Programme.
The funds, disbursed through the National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF), will support the groups to strengthen income-generating activities, improve household incomes and enhance the welfare of their members.
Speaking during the disbursement ceremony in Mwea, Kirinyaga County Woman Representative Jane Njeri called for increased government funding to NGAAF to enable the programme to meet its objectives.
Njeri said demand for financial support among grassroots groups remains high, with many organised groups seeking assistance to establish or expand income-generating ventures.
“I have always insisted that NGAAF must be funded adequately for it to work the way it was designed,” she said.
The legislator said increased funding would enable NGAAF to reach more beneficiaries and provide meaningful support to communities seeking to improve their livelihoods.
She said the Sh500,000 allocation to the five CBOs was part of a wider empowerment initiative targeting more than 100 groups across Kirinyaga County under the Women Economic Empowerment and Social Welfare Programme.
The beneficiaries are expected to invest the funds in activities that can expand their enterprises, increase incomes and improve the economic wellbeing of their families.
Njeri urged beneficiaries to use the funds prudently and ensure that the support creates sustainable economic opportunities within their communities.
