Hospital closed following the death of a patient after surgery

The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) yesterday ordered the immediate closure of Ominicare Medical Limited following the death of a patient at the medical facility.

Public Health and Professional Standards Principal Secretary (PS) Mary Muthoni said that the hospital was closed following a tragic incident that led to the death of Ms. Lucy Wambui, who underwent a plastic surgery procedure called “Body by Design”.

Ms. Muthoni said that KMPDC conducted a comprehensive investigation into the facility’s practices and standards, and the findings revealed serious non-compliance with medical institution regulations, specifically under Sections 4 and 15 of the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Act (Cap 253).

“The inspection found that the facility was operating below the required medical standards, failing to meet patient safety regulations crucial for protecting the health and well-being of patients,” said Ms. Muthoni.

The PS said that the facility will remain closed to ensure that the necessary public safety standards are adhered to and corrective actions are implemented to guarantee compliance with patient safety standards.

“Additionally, a thorough investigation is ongoing regarding the institution and the staff involved in Ms. Wambui’s treatment,” said the PS.

Muthoni said that the Council is examining the extent of culpability and determining the appropriate actions to ensure accountability and prevent future incidents of malpractice.

“The State Department for Public Health and Professional Standards through KMDC remains committed to upholding the highest standards of healthcare across Kenya and will continue to monitor compliance to protect the public,” said the PS.

She said that updates on the investigation will be provided as more information becomes available.
