Hospital seeks order to dispose of unclaimed bodies

Homa Bay County Referral Hospital is seeking a court order to dispose of 11 unclaimed bodies that have been lying at the hospital mortuary for more than two months now.

The hospital management said the bodies have not been collected in the mortuary for more than three months now, adding that some of them have begun to decompose.

Speaking today at the hospital, the administrator, Kennedy Ochieng Awino said they have a plan of burying the bodies in a mass grave adding that their relatives have not shown up to claim them.

“We have a plan of disposing off 11 unclaimed bodies that are from different places within the county because,” Kennedy noted.

He stated that the facility has issued a 14-day notice to the general public before disposing the bodies off.

The management plans on seeking a court order to give them a green light to conduct a mass burial within 14 days if the relatives of the deceased fail to collect them.

“This is to notify the public and relevant authorities that we have given a period of 2 weeks. You can come to the mortuary so that you can identify the bodies before we dispose them off,” he informed.

It was reported that some of the deceased died from road accidents, some were killed and their bodies dumped while other bodies were retrieved from the Lake and taken to the morgue by police officers.
