Kericho schools secure regional slots as county games conclude

The Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Term Two County Games concluded in Litein, Kericho County, with several schools securing qualification slots to represent the county at the upcoming Rift Valley Regional Championships in Narok.

The three-day competition, held from June 17 to June 19, brought together top-performing schools from Kericho, Soin-Sigowet, Belgut, Kipkelion East, Kipkelion West and Londiani sub-counties in a spirited contest across various sporting disciplines.

Speaking to KNA, Kericho County Quality Assurance and Standards Officer in the Ministry of Education Joseph Ochieng said the games provided a valuable platform for nurturing talent, promoting discipline and encouraging teamwork among learners.

He noted that the championships featured boys’ and girls’ football, boys’ rugby sevens, basketball 3×3, volleyball, lawn tennis and badminton for both boys and girls.

“The games offered students an opportunity to showcase their abilities while competing for places at the regional championships,” said Ochieng.

Kapsoit Secondary School emerged champions in the boys’ football category after a consistent campaign that saw them overcome strong opposition to secure the county title and a place at the regional games.

In girls’ football, Kericho Day Secondary School successfully defended their title after defeating Chelilis Girls 2-0 in the final, reaffirming their dominance in the county competition.

Kabianga High School clinched the boys’ volleyball title following an impressive performance throughout the tournament. The school maintained a strong unbeaten run in the latter stages of the competition to secure qualification.

Iraa Girls Secondary School from Soin-Sigowet Sub-County emerged champions in the girls’ volleyball category after displaying outstanding teamwork and consistency.

The school capped a successful tournament by also winning the girls’ netball title in emphatic fashion, defeating their opponents 72-3 in the final. The double victory highlighted the school’s strong preparation and depth of talent ahead of the regional championships.

In 3×3 basketball, Tengecha Boys claimed the boys’ title after a series of fast-paced encounters that tested the team’s resilience and tactical discipline.

Sosiot Girls emerged champions in the girls’ basketball 3×3 competition following a determined campaign marked by skill, teamwork and composure during crucial matches.

The championships were hosted at several venues within Litein. Football, volleyball, basketball 3×3 and racquet games were played at Litein Boys High School, while netball and rugby sevens matches were staged at Chemoiben and Kabartegan grounds.

The games also witnessed strict enforcement of competition regulations. Disciplinary action was taken against Soliat Boys after officials established that the school had fielded non-students during a match against St. Thomas School.

Following investigations, the school was disqualified and banned from the competition in accordance with KSSSA eligibility rules.

The event attracted large crowds of students, teachers, parents and local residents, creating a vibrant atmosphere characterized by enthusiasm, colour and healthy competition.

Education and sports officials commended participating schools for demonstrating discipline, sportsmanship, and adherence to fair play throughout the tournament.

They noted that school sports continue to play a critical role in talent identification and development while fostering social cohesion among learners from diverse backgrounds.

Officials expressed confidence that the county champions are adequately prepared to compete at the Rift Valley Regional Championships and urged them to intensify training in pursuit of qualification to the national school games.
