at the Kiambu Headquarters attracting local leadership and stakeholders from the, health sector.

The event, graced by Governor Kimani Wamatangi, highlighted the county’s ongoing efforts to improve healthcare infrastructure and empower nurses as essential pillars of the health system.

Speaking during the event, Governor Wamatangi emphasized Kiambu’s leadership in healthcare infrastructure, noting that the County now has the highest number of Level 4 hospitals in Kenya.

He expressed deep appreciation for nurses, praising their dedication, compassion, and the exceptional work they continue to deliver.

The Governor commended nurses for their commitment amidst the recent strike, stating that they “rendered themselves to ensure Kiambu continued to function and patients continued to receive care.”

Wamatangi added that since assuming office, he had prioritized the promotion of nurses, drawing from the list of workers he requested upon entering his gubernatorial term. He urged nurses to view his efforts with a wider lens, highlighting that under his leadership, there have been no salary delays, affirming that nurses in Kiambu are paid on time.

Governor Wamatangi also highlighted the County’s financial progress under his leadership, noting that he has increased Kiambu’s revenue from Sh2.9 billion to KSh5.5 billion, with a target of KSh7 billion by the end of the year.

He assured nurses that this growth directly strengthens the County’s ability to improve healthcare services and expand the workforce.

The Governor encouraged nurses to remain hopeful, stating that the steps he has taken, including promotions, timely salary payments, and investment in new facilities, demonstrate his commitment to their welfare.

Dr. Patrick Nyaga, Chief Officer for Health Services, highlighted the importance of continuous empowerment for nurses over the years.

He expressed deep appreciation for the dedication and professionalism that nurses demonstrate daily, noting that they remain the backbone of the health sector, as they are directly responsible for patient care.

“We thank you, Your Excellency, for launching new X-ray machines, other essential medical equipment, and the Hospital Management and Information System (HMIS), which have significantly improved efficiency in health facilities,” he added.

Dr. Nyaga also recognized Nurse, Martha Mburu, describing her as an internationally celebrated professional who deserves recognition for her exemplary service.

Joseph Muhia Kamau, Member of County Assembly (MCA) for Githunguri Ward, and Chair of the Health Committee, urged the Governor to recruit more nurses to meet the growing demand in county facilities.

He noted that under Governor Wamatangi’s leadership, Kiambu has developed 26 Level 3 hospitals and 6 Level 4 hospitals, making adequate staffing a priority.

Nurse Martha Mburu, who is a 2025 honoree, raised concerns about staffing disparities. She pointed out that while Kiambu has 183 nurses in one facility, Thika Level 5 Hospital operates with only two nurses, supported by partners.

She appealed to the government to increase staffing to reduce burnout and ensure high-quality care.

The Forum emphasized the essential role nurses play in maternal health, emergency response, and community well-being, while calling for continued investment in both infrastructure and human resources to keep Kiambu’s health sector strong and effective.
