The County Government of Uasin Gishu has thrown its weight behind the revival of the Moi University Savings and Credit Cooperative Society (MUSCO), calling on officials to embrace sound governance, prudent financial management and aggressive membership growth to restore the society to its former standing.
The appeal was made on Tuesday during the first members’ education and mobilisation meeting since the society’s revival.
Prior to yesterday’s colourful event in Eldoret City, MUSCO had faced what speakers described as years of uncertainty linked to poor governance, weak internal controls and mismanagement of members’ funds.
The society received a significant boost earlier this year when Cabinet Secretary for Cooperatives and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Wycliffe Oparanya reinstated its certificate, clearing the way for operations to resume.
Addressing the gathering, County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Cooperatives and Enterprise Development Dr. Philip Chebunet said the county administration under Governor Jonathan Bii was fully committed to supporting the society’s turnaround and expansion.
“Even Cooperatives CS Wycliffe Oparanya is very committed to this revival; hence, his decision to reinstate the society’s certificate. It is upon you to make sure that MUSCO rises again and serves its members effectively,” Chebunet told members present.
He noted the reinstatement offered the members a fresh chance to rebuild the institution on principles of accountability, transparency and sound financial management.
The official stressed that Governor Bii was passionate about the revival of cooperative societies and was keen to see MUSCO reclaim its role as a key vehicle for members’ financial empowerment.
Prof. Simeon Mining, who represented Moi University Vice Chancellor, said the university would work closely with the MUSCO management committee to strengthen the society and restore members’ confidence.
On his part, Chief Officer for Cooperatives Elphas Kesio urged members to stay focused and re-strategise as they rebuild the institution.
He challenged them to increase their shares, recruit more eligible members and take an active part in the society’s affairs, stressing that a strong membership base and effective governance are essential for long-term sustainability.
