M-Pesa Foundation has handed over refurbished classrooms worth Sh35 million to Omolo Agar Comprehensive School in Rachuonyo West, Homa Bay County in efforts to support the education sector in the region.
The facelift includes refurbished classrooms from ECDE to Grade 9, new lockers, improved sanitation facilities, and an ICT laboratory equipped with computers.
The school has also been made disability-friendly, enabling learners with physical challenges to move around with ease.
According to M-Pesa Foundation Executive Trustee, Patricia Ithau, the organization has invested about Sh35 billion in the education sector to date, impacting thousands of learners nationwide in partnership with the Ministry of Education.
Speaking during the event, Ms. Ithau reiterated the investment was part of the foundation’s continued commitment to improving access to quality education in the country.
“We believe that with every brick we lay, we are building a brighter future for Kenya. This project reflects our mission to support learners, particularly from disadvantaged backgrounds, by providing them with conducive environments for learning,” she asserted.
She added that more than 1,000 learners from vulnerable families across all 47 counties have also benefited from M-Pesa Foundation Academy.
Ms. Ithau challenged both private and public sectors to give back to society, stressing that initiatives like this leave a lasting impact.
Interior Principal Secretary, Dr. Raymond Omollo, who also attended the ceremony as the Chief Guest, described the project as a revolutionary step for the local community.
“For years, our children have been learning in dilapidated classrooms. Today, they finally have a safe and dignified place to study. Education is the greatest equalizer, and this investment will help nurture responsible citizens who can contribute to building our country,” Omollo said.
He further noted that the national government has also intensified its investment in education citing the recruitment of 76,000 teachers under President William Ruto’s administration with plans to hire 24,000 more by the end of the year.
Dr Omollo also highlighted the construction of 23,000 classrooms nationwide to boost infrastructure.
The PS urged parents to support teachers by taking interest in their children’s academic progress and reinforcing discipline at home.
He further encouraged the community to protect the new facilities, noting that additional land has already been secured to construct a playground for ECDE learners.
The refurbished Omolo Agar School is expected to improve enrolment, create a better learning environment, and provide learners with digital skills to compete in a modern economy.
