Marakwet West Member of Parliament Timothy Kipchumba has reaffirmed the constituency’s commitment to improving education standards through strategic investments in infrastructure, institutional governance and learner mentorship programmes aimed at enhancing academic performance and overall learning outcomes.
The legislator commissioned several education projects funded through the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF), including a new administration block at Chogoo Comprehensive School, three classrooms at Nerkwo Comprehensive School and a 200-bed capacity dormitory at St. Peter’s Marakwet Boys Senior School.
The projects are expected to address infrastructure shortages, improve learning conditions, strengthen institutional management and support the growing enrolment in schools across the constituency.
Speaking during the commissioning exercise, Kipchumba emphasized the importance of sustained investment in educational facilities, describing infrastructure as a critical component in the delivery of quality education.
“The provision of adequate educational infrastructure is central to enhancing learning outcomes and ensuring institutions are properly equipped to deliver quality education services. We remain committed to bridging infrastructure gaps in all learning institutions within Marakwet West,” said the MP.
The programme began at Chogoo Comprehensive School, where Kipchumba officially opened a newly completed administration block designed to improve school management, coordination of academic activities, record keeping and service delivery.
He noted that strong administrative structures play a vital role in supporting effective leadership, compliance with education standards and efficient implementation of school programmes.
The MP later proceeded to Nerkwo Comprehensive School, where he commissioned three newly constructed classrooms aimed at easing congestion caused by increasing student enrolment.
Established in 1959, Nerkwo Primary School has experienced steady growth in learner numbers over the years, placing pressure on available facilities and necessitating expansion of infrastructure.
Kipchumba said the additional classrooms would help create a more conducive learning environment by reducing overcrowding and improving teacher-learner interaction.
“The new classrooms will help optimize the learner-classroom ratio, decongest existing facilities and improve curriculum delivery. We shall continue expanding infrastructure in line with enrolment trends and educational needs,” he said.
The commissioning exercise culminated at St. Peter’s Marakwet Boys Senior School, where the MP officially opened a 200-bed dormitory aimed at improving boarding facilities and student welfare.

The modern facility is expected to ease accommodation challenges, reduce congestion in existing dormitories and provide a more comfortable environment for learners.
Kipchumba described the dormitory as a strategic investment that will contribute to improved academic performance by creating a stable and supportive learning environment.
“This facility will significantly improve accommodation standards and student welfare while supporting the school’s efforts to provide a conducive academic environment,” he said.
The event coincided with the school’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), which brought together parents, teachers, students and local leaders to review the institution’s performance and discuss future development priorities.
The MP underscored the importance of Annual General Meetings in promoting accountability, transparency and stakeholder participation in school management.
“Annual General Meetings provide an important platform for consultation, accountability and collective oversight. They strengthen governance and ensure all stakeholders contribute to the growth and success of educational institutions,” he said.
During the event, students also participated in a mentorship and motivation programme facilitated by Kapsabet Boys Senior School Chief Principal Kipchumba Maiyo.
Maiyo encouraged learners to remain focused on their academic goals and emphasized the importance of discipline, consistency and hard work in achieving success.
“Academic excellence is built on commitment, discipline and continuous effort. Students must develop positive study habits and remain focused on their objectives if they are to realize their full potential,” he said.
Elgeyo Marakwet Deputy Governor Prof. Grace Cheserek lauded the integrated approach being implemented in Marakwet West, noting that combining infrastructure development with mentorship and governance reforms creates a strong foundation for educational success.
She said investments in education remain among the most effective ways of promoting human capital development and long-term socio-economic transformation.
“Education infrastructure is a key pillar of human capital development. When combined with mentorship programmes and strong governance systems, it creates an environment that supports improved learning outcomes and sustainable development,” said Prof. Cheserek.
Marakwet West Sub-County Director of Education Ledama Koriko also welcomed the infrastructure investments, noting that they would strengthen institutional capacity and improve service delivery in schools.
Koriko urged school administrators, parents and other stakeholders to ensure proper utilization and maintenance of the new facilities to maximize their impact.
“The commissioned projects will enhance curriculum delivery, learner retention and overall academic performance. Stakeholders must work together to ensure the facilities are effectively utilized and maintained,” he said.
Education stakeholders attending the event observed that the combination of infrastructure expansion, governance strengthening and mentorship programmes is expected to improve learning outcomes, institutional efficiency and resilience within schools across the constituency.
Kipchumba reiterated his commitment to supporting education through evidence-based development initiatives aligned with national education priorities and performance targets.
“Our development agenda remains focused on expanding access to quality education through targeted infrastructure investments, institutional strengthening and stakeholder collaboration. This is key to achieving sustainable improvements in educational outcomes across Marakwet West,” he said.
