NCA condemns building at the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital

By M, KNA

The National Construction Authority (NCA) has recommended the immediate evacuation of patients and other persons in all floors at Nyangito wing of the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital following structural challenges.

In a press statement sent to newsrooms on Wednesday, NCA noted that preliminary audit of the affected building block had indicated column compression failure in three critical basement columns, excessive beam deflections, poor concrete quality and deterioration of slabs and walls resulting from extensive leakages.

“The team has additionally recommended comprehensive structural tests and investigations be undertaken to determine the full extent of the damage and to inform an appropriate and safe course of action,” said NCA’s Executive Director Engineer Maurice Akech.

Eng. Akech urged members of the public, hospital staff and all stakeholders to remain calm as the NCA together with the multi-sectoral technical team continue to interrogate the situation thoroughly.

He also reiterated that the Authority’s priority remains the safety and wellbeing of all users of the facility and they are committed to ensuring a conclusive and responsible decision is made regarding the way forward.
