The National Land Commission (NLC), in collaboration with the county and national governments, has initiated an inquiry into the acquisition of land in Muhuru Bay.
The process involves compensating landowners for 25 hectares earmarked for the development of Muhuru pier in Nyatike Sub County-Migori.
According to the NLC Chairperson Gershom Otachi, the land is required for projects under the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA to develop the pier.
Otachi said that the acquisition has been gazetted and appealed for those affected to participate in the ongoing hearings.
Helborn Wahindi, a resident of Muhuru Bay, confirmed that landowners had presented their cases before the Commission during the compensation hearings.
The National Land Commission have also engaged with the local community to address their concerns.
Marion Akoth revealed that she had surrendered 0.445 acres of land to the government after being assured of being allocated alternative land.
The inquiry is expected to provide clarity and fairness in the acquisition process, ensuring that affected residents receive just compensation while allowing development to proceed in the area.
The NCL also engaged the county government on key public lands, including Muhuru Pier, Macalder Public Land, Canaan Land, and Lichota Airport land.
