Nyamita outlines education, youth empowerment agenda in Migori

Uriri Member of Parliament Mark Nyamita has called on teachers to play a leading role in mentoring young people, describing them as key partners in shaping responsible citizens and improving education standards in Migori County.

Speaking during a meeting with members of the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) in Migori Town, Nyamita, who is also a gubernatorial aspirant, said teachers remain central to nurturing learners and supporting initiatives that promote academic excellence and responsible citizenship.

He said his leadership would continue working closely with teachers to address challenges affecting the education sector while creating opportunities that enable learners to realise their full potential.

The legislator announced plans to organise a mentorship programme targeting students who completed the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations last year.

He said the programme will guide school leavers on career choices, life skills and responsible decision-making before they join colleges, universities and other institutions of higher learning.

Nyamita appealed to teachers to help mobilise eligible students, noting that their close interaction with learners places them in the best position to identify those who would benefit most from the mentorship programme.

He also urged teachers to encourage school leavers to apply for national identity cards and subsequently register as voters, saying increased civic participation among young people is essential in strengthening democracy and promoting responsible leadership.

During the meeting, teachers raised concerns over persistent system downtimes and other operational challenges affecting service delivery in schools.

Nyamita acknowledged the concerns and assured the teachers that he would continue engaging relevant government institutions to seek practical and lasting solutions.

He commended teachers for their dedication and commitment, saying their efforts had contributed significantly to improved academic performance in Migori County.

“The success we have achieved would not have been possible without working closely with teachers,” he said.

Nyamita noted that teachers have also played a critical role in implementing education programmes, including identifying deserving learners for bursary support, enabling many students from vulnerable families to remain in school.

He thanked teachers for their continued collaboration with leaders in advancing education and community development initiatives across the county.

Addressing the county’s political environment, Nyamita urged residents to remain peaceful and avoid being divided by political competition as campaigns ahead of the 2027 General Election gather momentum.

“The final decision on who is elected to any position lies with the people,” he said, adding that voters would ultimately determine the county’s leadership through the ballot.
