Nyasore mixed day secondary school shines after years of low grades

Nyasore Mixed Secondary school in Homa-Bay County has stormed into the limelight with exemplary performance in the 2024 KCSE exams

To many the school has emerged as a beacon of hope and success, though shunned at some point because of its low grades, after the release of the 2024 KCSE exams, it now shines among other academic giants in Rachuonyo East Sub- County of Homa Bay County.

Under the leadership of Mr. Thomas Ombuki, who became the school’s principal in 2021, Nyasore mixed has had a remarkable turnaround both in terms of student population and performance.

“When I joined the school in the year 2021, the school had a population of 49 students with just 14 candidates sitting for the KCSE Exams that year,” the principal said.

That year, Ombuki said the school’s mean grade was as low as 2.4, with no student attaining a grade higher than a C-, which saw the school ranked last among 48 schools in the sub-county.

Despite the low enrollment challenge, the principal said that together with the board of management and teachers, they have worked tirelessly to improve the school’s performance.

“By November 2021, the school registered 18 candidates for KCSE, with three students attaining a C+ qualifying them for university admission. The mean grade rose to 4.5, a notable improvement that boosted the confidence of the school’s community,” principal Ombuki said.

He said the school has continued its upward trend, and in the year 2023, with 58 candidates sitting for the exams, two students scored a mean grade of B+, while over 30 candidates earned C+ and above, achieving a mean grade of 6.6, solidifying its growing streak of progressive academic success.

In the year 2024, Nyasore secondary registered a total number of 118 candidates that marked its highest ever enrollment according to the principal.

“The result is so impressive with the top student scoring an A- and the mean grade rising to 7.5.” Principal Ombuki said.

With this kind of success, the Principal said the school has set an ambitious target of achieving a mean grade of 8.0 in the next exams.

The school principal credits the transformation of the school from a low-performing school to the level where it is now due to the dedication of the teachers, support from the community, and the students’ hard work.

However, he also acknowledges challenges the school has, such as the inability of many parents to afford school fees, as most of the parents depend on small-scale farming for their livelihood.

The principal expressed gratitude to the area MP Kabondo Kasipul constituency Eve Obara whose financial support from the National Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) has been of great help to the school’s success so far, also noting that his delocalization from his hometown Nyamira to lead Nyasore Mixed secondary school has proven to be a blessing, both for him and the school.

Nyasore Mixed Secondary School is located at the border of Nyamira and Homabay counties is now a source of pride in Rachuonyo East Sub County, serving as an inspiring story of resilience, commitment and focus to achieve academic excellence.
