More than 2,500 people gathered at the Oshwal Centre Grounds in Nairobi on Sunday to mark the 12th International Day of Yoga, in one of the largest yoga events held in Kenya.
The celebrations, organized by the High Commission of India in Kenya, brought together members of the diplomatic corps, government officials, business leaders, members of the Indian diaspora, students, yoga practitioners, and wellness enthusiasts from across the country.
The event was graced by Director-General of United Nations Office in Nairobi (UNON) Zainab Hawa Bangura, who highlighted yoga’s role in promoting health, well-being, and inclusivity and welcomed initiatives that make yoga accessible to all.
She underscored how the ancient Indian practice of yoga has become a global movement of physical and mental well-being transcending geographical, cultural, and psychological boundaries.
The High Commissioner of India to Kenya, Dr. Adarsh Swaika, described yoga as one of India’s most valuable contributions to the world, noting its role in promoting physical health, mental well-being, and inner harmony.
Referring to this year’s theme, “Yoga for Healthy Aging,” Dr. Swaika said yoga offers a simple, accessible, and sustainable pathway to healthier lives for people of all ages. He also highlighted the growing popularity of yoga in Kenya and its contribution to strengthening people-to-people ties between Kenya and India.
Bangura underscored the importance of wellness, mental health, and healthy lifestyles in today’s fast-paced world, saying yoga plays a key role in fostering balance, resilience, and overall well-being. She commended the practice for bringing together people from different cultures, nationalities, and generations.
The program featured rhythmic yoga and stick yoga demonstrations by local practitioners, showcasing the diversity of yoga practices. Participants also took part in the Common Yoga Protocol, performed simultaneously by thousands of attendees under the guidance of trained instructors.
Ayurveda information stalls were also set up at the venue, offering participants an opportunity to learn about the traditional system of medicine and its holistic approach to health and wellness.
The International Day of Yoga, proposed by India and adopted by the United Nations in 2014, is observed annually on June 21 and has grown into a global movement promoting health, well-being, and harmony.
The High Commission of India thanked participants, partners, volunteers and supporters for contributing to the success of the 2026 celebrations.
