Education stakeholders in Karachuonyo West Sub-County have raised a concern over widespread theft of digital learning gadgets in primary schools.
Marauding buglers have been breaking into the rooms where the gadgets are kept and stealing them.
The latest burglary incident occurred at Oindo and Siala Primary schools in Kanjira location.
Kanjira location Chief, Elly Obuya, said that the burglars went to Oindo Primary School and broke into the offices of the Head teacher and Deputy Headteacher where the gadgets were kept.
They gained entry and stole various electronic gadgets including 35 tablets, a microscope, three rims of photocopying papers and a printer.
Obuya said the gangsters broke in silently so as not to alert the school security guard.
“The school security guard told me that he was on duty that night and was seated in a classroom near the administration block. He only realized the theft after the buglers had left” Obuya said.
The administrator said they had reported the matter to police who are carrying out investigations.
He urged the school administration to install anti burglary doors and padlocks in the institution’s buildings.
“The padlocks I saw were not worth being used for locking valuables. The school management should invest in better padlocks,” Obuya said.
He also urged schools to employ well-trained security guards to take care of the school property at night.
“The security guards are aged, the school management should recruit youthful trained guards.” He added.
A similar theft occurred at Siala Primary School where thugs broke into one of the buildings and stole two laptops.
“They wanted to steal a printer also, but they busted by the security guard before they took off with the laptops.” Obuya added.
He said they had reported the matter to police.
George Okoth, a resident, called on the government to beef up security in the schools.
