Trader raise concerns over burglaries in Kapkatet

The business community in Kapkatet town have raised concern over alarming cases of break-ins into the premises and asked security agencies to crack on the criminal gang behind the incidences

The outcry comes in the wake of the latest burglary incident at Kapkatet Market in Bureti Sub-county after the gang broke into an electronics shop and stole goods of unknown value.

The incident is said to have occurred when the business premise, which deals in televisions and other electronic appliances, was forcefully accessed using crude tools, despite the shop having been securely locked.

According to the owner of the shop, who sought anonymity for security reasons, the gang gained access to the premises that was usually secured with a steel door using crude weapons.

He told KNA that preliminary examination at the crime scene revealed that the burglars made away with several television sets and other electronic gadgets whose exact number is yet to be established.

The owner further disclosed that a caretaker arrangement had been made for someone to sleep in the shop as an added security measure, but the said individual was not present during the incident, a gap that is now believed to have been exploited by the intruders.

Kapkatet police detectives have since launched investigations into the incident, with preliminary indications pointing to well-coordinated robberies targeting high-value electronics.

Area Chief Daniel Koskey condemned the incident, noting that insecurity cases in the market are a growing concern and warning that such criminal acts threaten local businesses and investor confidence.

“We are concerned about increasing cases of theft at the Kapkatet market. Business owners must also take responsibility for ensuring proper security arrangements are in place, including functional surveillance and trusted night guards,” said Chief Koskey.

He urged residents to cooperate with security agencies by reporting suspicious movements, adding that investigations are ongoing and those behind the incident will be brought to justice.

Concerned residents of Kapkatet have expressed alarm over the rising cases of break-ins targeting businesses within the market, calling for urgent intervention to restore public confidence and safeguard traders’ investments.

They noted that electronics shops are increasingly becoming targets for burglars, citing gaps in nighttime surveillance and weak deterrent mechanisms within the Trading Center.

The residents have proposed enhanced mitigation measures, including installation of CCTV systems, deployment of licensed night guards, improved street lighting within the market, and strengthened coordination between traders, local administration, and police patrol units.

Meanwhile, traders at Kapkatet have urged authorities to intensify security patrols, especially during night hours, to curb rising cases of theft targeting businesses.
