The County of Uasin Gishu has finally released the long-awaited disbursement of a record Sh 186.5 million in bursaries, set to benefit over 24,900 students across the county.
The first phase of the scholarship is expected to cover needy students from Moiben and Karuna/Meibeki Wards barely a year after a similar exercise across all counties experienced delays due to disputes between the Office of the Controller of Budget and the Council of Governors (CoG).
The delay originated from jurisdictional disputes between county and national governments over which entity should fund secondary and higher education, coupled with stringent financial approvals from the Office of the Controller of the Budget (OCOB).
The issue affected thousands of parents and students from vulnerable backgrounds who depend on this support to sustain their education.
Speaking during the event at AIC Belekenya grounds, Karuna/Meibeki ward, Moiben Sub County, Governor Dr Jonathan Bii Chelilim affirmed that education remains the greatest investment the county can make for the future of the people, highlighting the need to continue prioritizing programs that empower learners and support families.
“Following approval by the Office of the Controller of Budget, and through persistence, consultations, and continuous engagement, our County is now among the few counties that have successfully resumed the disbursement of bursary funds,” Noted Governor Chelilim.
Also present were Deputy Governor Evans Kapkea, Education CECM Lucy Njoroge, and other senior county officials and education stakeholders.
