United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Daniel Lelgojine has been declared the winner of the Poro Ward by-election in Samburu West Sub-County following a successful voting exercise conducted on Thursday.
The results were announced by Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Returning Officer for Samburu West Constituency Sophie Leleruk after tallying of votes from all the 16 polling stations in the ward.
Lelgojine garnered 2,328 votes to defeat his closest rival Josphat Jumani Leleur of KANU, who received 1,036 votes. ODM candidate Emmanuel Lemeteki came third with 830 votes.
While declaring the results, Leleruk said Poro Ward has a total of 6,358 registered voters, out of whom 4,194 cast their ballots, translating to a voter turnout of 65.9 per cent.
She noted that the election exercise was peaceful and orderly across all polling stations, with no cases of insecurity or electoral malpractice reported during the voting process.
However, the Returning Officer disclosed that a biometric voter identification machine malfunctioned briefly at Sirata Orobi polling station but was promptly replaced to avoid disruption of the exercise.
The Poro Ward seat fell vacant earlier this year following the death of area MCA Patrick Lerte.
