Wamalwa Kijana Teaching and Referral Hospital procures solar equipment to boost service delivery

Wamalwa Kijana Teaching and Referral Hospital (WKTRH) in Trans Nzoia has taken a major step towards improving healthcare service delivery by procuring a modern Solar Surgery System designed to provide uninterrupted power supply during critical surgical procedures.

The system was introduced by the Ministry of Health in conjunction with the county government of Trans Nzoia to address challenges caused by frequent power outages, which have occasionally disrupted operations and posed risks to patient safety.

The Vice Chairperson of WKTRH Ronald Masindano stated that the hospital remains committed to investing in modern healthcare technologies that improve service delivery, patient safety, and operational efficiency, setting an example for other healthcare facilities seeking innovative solutions to power reliability challenges.

“The solar equipment will help in managing time and economies of scale and enable us to  minimize referrals and become a self-sustaining hospital. We’ve had positive feedback from a variety of hospitals who are already using the equipment and we are glad to be among those hospitals,” he said.

According to WKTRH Medical Superintendent Dr Zaitun Akajaroit Mulaa, the investment reflects the hospital’s commitment to delivering safe, quality, and uninterrupted healthcare services, which will improve overall patient outcomes.

“We are pleased to acquire a solar-powered system for the theatres. We’ve had challenges in power outages, which is why we procured the equipment to be our backup and ensure uninterrupted healthcare,” she mentioned.

Rose Wangila, the WKTRH administrator, expressed the hospital’s commitment to providing quality services through engaging with partners and stakeholders to ensure the hospital remains fully functional.

“As a hospital, we are grateful for this equipment, which will greatly help in service delivery. We want to ensure quality service delivery through continued partnerships and stakeholder engagement,” she noted.

This initiative supports the hospital’s efforts to adopt sustainable, environmentally friendly energy solutions while keeping lifesaving medical services available at all times.
