Police in Maralal town have arrested a man who fired an AK 47 rifle indiscriminately in Shabaa village on Wednesday morning.
Speaking to KNA, area Assistant Chief Zablon Lekangu confirmed that five gunshots were fired in different areas of Shabaa that led to armed police response.
Accompanied by Administration police officers and with the help of members of the public, the Assistant Chief accosted the suspect who was arrested opposite a bank in Maralal town.
“We cornered and disarmed the suspect in Maralal town and recovered an AK 47 rifle with 22 rounds of ammunition before taking him to Maralal police station for formal charges,” said the Assistant Chief.
“The suspect is well known and he is a repeat offender tied to several crimes in the area,” he noted.
Lekangu noted that nobody including the suspect was injured during the forty-minute ordeal and thanked members of the public for working together with the police to apprehend the suspect.
At the same time, the Assistant Chief urged residents to report anyone in possession of an illegal firearm and called on those holding such weapons to surrender them to the nearest police station or chief’s office.
