Boda boda riders in Kiambu county have resorted to electric bikes to cut on operational costs following the sharp rise in fuel prices across the globe due to the ongoing conflict in Iran.
The operators are adopting new ways to cope with the escalating cost of transport. One of the most notable shifts has been the rapid switch to electric motorbikes, which many say were cheaper and more reliable alternative to petrol‑powered motorcycles. It is now evident that the introduction of electric motorbikes has offered significant relief to both riders and customers. Companies such as Roam and Spiro have rolled out electric motorcycles that are helping Kenyans manage the rising cost of living by reducing daily transport expenses.
Speaking to KNA in Kiambu Town, Andrew Gathoni, a boda boda rider using a Roam electric motorcycle, said the switch has transformed his daily operations.
He explained that he now spends Sh300 on charging and battery use, compared to the over Sh500 he previously spent on petrol.
“The electric bikes are much cheaper to run. I save more, and I’m able to meet my daily expenses without struggling,” he said.
Gathoni added that the bike’s double‑battery system has made his work even more efficient. While he uses one battery on the road, the second one charges, allowing him to operate throughout the day without downtime. This rotation, he said, ensures he serves more customers and maintains steady earnings.
He further noted that the electric motorbike comes with a two‑year warranty, giving riders enough time to organize their finances, repay loans, and manage household needs.
According to him, the company covers most major services during the warranty period, with riders only paying for minor charges when necessary.
“Knowing that the company handles the big repairs gives us peace of mind. It reduces the burden and makes the bike more affordable in the long run,” he added.
Customers, too, are increasingly opting for electric motorbike rides due to their stable and sometimes lower fares. Many passengers say the rides are quieter, smoother, and more cost‑friendly, especially at a time when fuel prices remain unpredictable.
With more riders embracing electric motorcycles, Kiambu is positioning itself as a leader in modern, eco‑friendly transport.
The shift is expected to continue, even as fuel prices fluctuate and more Kenyans seek cost‑effective alternatives.
