Women leaders and residents from Tharaka Nithi County have formed a grassroots movement dubbed Warembo Na Faya aimed at mobilising women to support government development programmes and enhance socio-economic empowerment at the community level.
The women, who gathered in large numbers at the DCC Grounds in Chuka, deliberated on the structure of the movement and elected officials to coordinate its activities across the county.
Speaking during the meeting, Mercy Nkanya said the initiative was designed to bring together women in support of government programmes under the administration of President William Ruto and Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, which, she said, are focused on improving livelihoods at the grassroots.
Nkanya highlighted the Social Health Authority (SHA) programme, noting that it has significantly improved access to healthcare services by reducing the financial burden of medical expenses on households.
She further cited various government empowerment initiatives targeting women, youth, and small-scale traders, saying they have enabled many residents to engage in income-generating activities and improve their household incomes.
“We have agreed as women to come together under this movement to support development initiatives that are transforming lives at the community level,” she said.
Nkanya also urged leaders and residents to avoid unnecessary political disputes, saying attention should be directed towards supporting ongoing development projects that benefit ordinary citizens.
Another member, Karimi Kagendo, said the movement would strengthen women’s participation in development programmes and enhance their involvement in government initiatives at the grassroots level.
She noted that collective action among women would help amplify their voices and ensure they benefit more effectively from available opportunities.
Violet Muthoni, also a member of the movement, said Warembo Na Faya would play a key role in sensitising women on available government programmes while promoting unity and cooperation among women in the county.
She added that the initiative would also help improve uptake of development programmes by ensuring women are well-informed and actively involved in community development activities.
The members said the movement will serve as a platform for mentorship, networking, and economic empowerment, particularly for women engaged in small businesses and self-help groups.
