The construction of Shibinga Market has reached 85 per cent completion, with Governor Fernandes Barasa saying the facility will play a critical role in transforming trade and livelihoods in the region.
Speaking during an inspection of the project yesterday, Barasa said the modern market is part of the County Government of Kakamega’s broader economic transformation agenda aimed at empowering small-scale traders, farmers and entrepreneurs through improved infrastructure.
“The construction of modern markets is central to our commitment to creating an enabling environment for businesses to thrive. Shibinga Market will not only provide dignified trading spaces but also stimulate economic activities and create employment opportunities for our people,” said Barasa.
The Governor noted that the project reflects his administration’s focus on grassroots economic empowerment through investment in modern and inclusive public infrastructure.
The facility features modern trading stalls, office spaces, a hotel section and improved sanitation amenities designed to enhance hygiene, efficiency and convenience for traders and customers.
Barasa said the market is expected to become a key commercial hub in Mumias East Sub-County by improving market access for farmers and reducing post-harvest losses through better storage and trading facilities.
He added that the county government remains committed to implementing development projects that directly impact residents by strengthening local economies and supporting sustainable wealth creation.
Residents and traders in the area have welcomed the project, expressing optimism that the modern facility will attract more business opportunities and improve the overall trading environment once completed.
The county government has intensified investment in market infrastructure across Kakamega as part of efforts to modernise trade centres and enhance economic growth at the grassroots level.
