Anglican Church concerned over political intolerance

The Anglican Church has expressed concern over the growing culture of political hostility, insults, abusive language by leaders, and incitement that has continued to characterise the political discourse.

Noting that leadership is a sacred trust, Nyahururu Anglican Diocesan Bishop Mjr. Rt. Samson Gachathi advised those entrusted with public office to speak with dignity, restraint, and responsibility.

He called on political leaders across the political divide to avoid inflammatory statements, personal attacks, and divisive rhetoric that may endanger peace and national cohesion.

Bishop Gachathi said the country must reject politics of hatred and intimidation and instead embrace dialogue, mutual respect, issue-based engagements, and peaceful coexistence.

The ACK Prelate spoke at the Nyahururu’s Christ the King Cathedral Church during a ceremony where he commissioned over 1,400 men into the church’s Kenya Anglican Men Association (KAMA). He was flanked by his Bondo counterpart Bishop Prof. David Kodia.

The bishop noted that the church was also concerned over an increased tendency of tribal profiling and ethnic suspicion, noting that this remains a serious threat to national unity and peaceful coexistence.

He challenged leaders at all levels to become agents of peace, unity, and reconciliation rather than promoting divisions.

He, at the same time, decried rising cases of criminal gangs, organized goons, thefts, violence, and insecurity in parts of the country and hence called for concerted efforts by all stakeholders to join hands in addressing the challenges.

He noted with concern the increased cases of unexplained disappearances of young children, saying such incidents have caused great fear, anxiety, and emotional pain to families and communities.

He called on security agencies to conduct swift, thorough, and transparent investigations into these incidents and ensure that those responsible are brought to book.
