Homa Bay County Director for Adult Education Samson Owino has called on Kenyans to embrace ongoing reforms in the education sector, describing education as a powerful tool for social transformation and economic empowerment.
Owino said quality education remains central to personal development, national growth, and improved livelihoods.
He noted the Competency-Based Education (CBE) system is designed to equip learners with practical skills while nurturing their talents and abilities.
“The competency-based education system is intended to help learners discover their strengths and acquire skills that are relevant in everyday life and the modern job market,” said Owino.
He pointed out that the curriculum had shifted focus from overreliance on examinations to a more holistic approach that promotes creativity, innovation, critical thinking, and life skills.
“We want learners to grow into responsible and productive members of society, not just pass examinations,” he added.
The officer emphasized that the new curriculum also seeks to create greater awareness among students, parents, and communities about the value of education and the opportunities available under the reformed system.
Owino urged parents to support the implementation of CBE and avoid being misled by misinformation surrounding the reforms. “There is no need for fear or confusion about the changes taking place in the education sector. These reforms are aimed at preparing learners for future careers, entrepreneurship, and meaningful participation in society,” Owino said.
He further highlighted the importance of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions in addressing unemployment and equipping young people with marketable skills.
Owino said vocational training offers learners an opportunity to become self-reliant through practical and technical skills.
“TVET institutions are critical because they empower young people with hands-on skills that can lead to self-employment and financial independence,” he said.
He noted that learners who complete vocational training receive recognized certificates that validate their competencies and improve their employment prospects.
The educationist identified adult education as a key pillar in promoting lifelong learning and empowering individuals who were unable to complete their formal education earlier in life and encouraged residents to enroll in such programmes to enhance both their social and economic well-being.
Owino said community learning centers have been established across Homa Bay County to provide adults with opportunities to continue learning, acquire employable skills, and improve their living standards.
He further called on all members of society to support education initiatives, saying investment in education is essential in reducing poverty, driving development, and building a brighter future for communities.
