‎Public advisory on heavy rains, landslides and flooding risks in Kericho

The County Government of Kericho has advised residents to stay alert due to ongoing heavy rainfall that has led to flooding and concerns about potential landslides in the area.

According to weather forecast from the Kenya Meteorological Department, the intensity of the rains remains high, with some parts of the county expected to receive above-average rainfall in the coming days, thereby increasing the risk of disasters.‎‎
County Executive Committee Member for Public Service Management and County Disaster Management Unit, Mr Jonathan Korir, has revealed that several areas, including Kamasian, Kunyak, and Chilchila Wards are particularly vulnerable to landslides due to their steep and unstable terrain.‎

In a statement, he emphasized that residents living in such high-risk zones should move to safer grounds immediately and remain vigilant until the situation stabilizes to prevent potential loss of life and property.‎
Meanwhile, Korir disclosed that the County Government has activated its disaster preparedness mechanisms to ensure timely response to any emergencies that may arise as a result of the heavy rainfall.‎
He explained that the County Government is working closely with local leaders, chiefs, and community-based organizations to sensitize residents on early warning signs and safety precautions to be taken during the ongoing rains.

“In light of the current weather situation, we urge our people to prioritize safety and heed official advisories issued by the County Government and the Meteorological Department,” said Mr. Korir.‎

Meanwhile, he says that the County Disaster Management Unit response teams are monitoring water levels, assessing risks and will remain standby to handle any disaster and offer necessary support in case any emergencies are reported within the county.‎
He has also urged residents to stay away from rivers and flooded areas, which are dangerous during this period particularly the Chemosit–Sondu river where two people recently drowned and Kipchorian–Nyando river, which has swollen significantly, posing a high risk of drowning.‎

In the meantime, motorists and pedestrians have also been advised to avoid crossing flooded roads and to report any incidents to the nearest local administration offices.
“The County Government remains fully committed to protecting lives and property, and we urge all residents to cooperate with authorities and observe safety guidelines until the rains subside,” he added.
