Anti-corruption drive targets grassroots oversight as team visits Murang’a county

The National Anti-Corruption Campaign Steering Committee which is under the Office of the Attorney General of Kenya, has called on members of the public to remain vigilant and ensure that funds allocated to development projects are used for their intended purposes.

Speaking in Murang’a County during a three-day public sensitisation tour, the committee’s National Director, Truphosa Achar, emphasized the need for accountability across all levels of government.

She noted that both the national and county governments, as well as all institutions utilizing public funds, must ensure prudent use of resources.

Achar added that the committee is spearheading knowledge transfer on social audits, with Kiharu Constituency and Murang’a County selected due to their reported prudent use of public resources.

“We want the team to carry out the best practices happening here in Kiharu constituency and Murang’a county where we have heard good stories on prudent use of taxpayers’ money.” Achar said.

Kiharu NG-CDF Chairman Peter Manyeki explained that the constituency has adopted a labour-based model for development projects, involving community members instead of contractors.

He noted that while the approach can be complex, it significantly reduces costs, particularly in projects such as classroom construction under the National Government Constituencies Development Fund.

“Here in Kiharu standalone classrooms cost between Sh950,000 and Sh1,050,000 because of this model.” He stated.

Wanjiku Mukora, Deputy Principal at Gikuu Day Secondary School, one of the institutions built from scratch using NG-CDF, said the project has had a positive impact on the community, benefiting students from surrounding areas.

“NG-CDF provides revision materials for our learners, we even have students coming from other counties to this School.” She noted.

Murang’a County anti-corruption Committee Chair Joseph Ngari urged residents to take an active role in monitoring public funds and demanding accountability.

Meanwhile, Dr. Felix Komu, representing anti-corruption committees across various counties, reminded the public of their right to access government services without paying bribes.

The committee encouraged citizens to report any cases of corruption and uphold integrity in public service delivery.
