Religious leaders urged to intensify fight against drugs

Religious leaders have been urged to take a more active role in the fight against alcohol and drug abuse among youth, as the country continues to grapple with the devastating social and health effects of substance misuse.

Speaking during a Religious Leaders’ Sensitisation Forum organised by the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) in Kapsabet, NACADA Board Chair Bishop Rev. Dr. Stephen Mairori called on the clergy to use their influence to guide congregants, particularly young people, towards a drug-free lifestyle.

Bishop Mairori emphasised that the church holds moral authority and occupies a strategic position in shaping behaviour within communities.

He revealed that plans are underway, in collaboration with Nandi Governor Stephen Sang, to establish rehabilitation centres across the county to offer treatment and recovery support for those struggling with addiction.

“The church must rise and take responsibility in guiding and counselling our young people. We must use our pulpits not only to preach but also to educate and rehabilitate those who have fallen victim to drugs,” said Bishop Mairori.

He added that counselling and guidance programmes will be integrated into church activities to provide continuous support to affected individuals and families.

Highlighting the country’s recent progress in the fight against drug trafficking, Bishop Mairori commended law enforcement agencies for intercepting a ship ferrying drugs worth Sh 8 billion in the Indian Ocean, noting that such milestones demonstrate the government’s commitment to curbing the menace.

The media was also challenged to play its part by using its platforms to spread awareness and educate the public on the dangers of alcohol and drug abuse.

Participants at the forum lauded NACADA’s engagement, terming it a step in the right direction toward uniting faith institutions, the government, and the public in addressing substance abuse.

The sensitisation meeting concluded with a renewed commitment to intensify community outreach and prevention programmes across Nandi County.
