Former Garissa governor Ali Korane has urged the Muslim community in the North Eastern region to rally behind President William Ruto’s re-election bid next year, arguing that the president has so far proven to be of benefit to the region’s development agenda.
Speaking during a meeting with the religious leaders in Garissa town where he was also popularlizing his re-election drive, Korane said the region had gained a lot from the current administration; from infrastructure development to policy changes, and it was only fair to support such a government for another term.
Korane, who served as Garissa governor between 2017 and 2022 is seeking a comeback for a second term on a United Democratic Party ticket in the next year’s elections.
“I want to urge you, I am running for re-election on a UDA party ticket and we have our president who is also the party leader William Ruto and is seeking a second ticket. As you support me, I want you to also support him in his bid,” Korane said.
“The president is a person who has stood with Muslims, he has supported construction of madrassas, he has also contributed money for construction of mosques and so he is a leader we can depend on,” he added.
At the same time Korane called on the religious leaders to be at the forefront in taming the runaway insecurity in Garissa town, which has caused fear among residents.
Korane said that although the security agencies are tasked with maintaining peace and security, the perpetrators of the crimes in the town were local youth who are well known and urged the leader to speak against criminal activities during their worship services.
