The Kiambu County Department of Youth Affairs, Sports and Communication has organized a Volleyball Tournament Bonanza at Ruiru Stadium to promote sportsmanship among the youth.
The event is part of the county’s efforts to provide local volleyball players with a platform to showcase their talent and advance their sporting careers.
The tournament, organized in partnership with the Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) Kiambu Branch, brought together 12 teams drawn from the county’s 12 sub-counties in a day-long competition that highlighted the growing popularity of volleyball among young people in the region.
The event was attended by County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Youth Affairs, Sports and Communication Ali Osman and Chief Officer for Youth and Sports Godfrey Masolo.
Speaking during the tournament, Osman reaffirmed the county government’s commitment to investing in sports infrastructure and programs geared towards nurturing young talent.
“We are committed to providing world-class facilities to nurture and empower our talented sportsmen in Kiambu County,” said Osman.
The tournament also marked the launch of a broader countywide volleyball initiative, set to be rolled out later this year, as part of efforts to expand the sport and create more opportunities for youth participation.
According to the Department of Youth Affairs, Sports and Communication, all participating teams were provided with playing uniforms to support their participation in the competition.
The event also offered newly trained volleyball umpires an opportunity to officiate matches and gain practical experience. The officials were drawn from the county’s umpire training program conducted in collaboration with the Kenya Volleyball Federation.
More than 60 aspiring volleyball umpires from various parts of the county have so far benefited from the program, which seeks to improve officiating standards while creating employment and empowerment opportunities for young people.
The county government has continued to prioritize sports development through the upgrading of sports facilities to international standards in a bid to improve the quality of sporting events and foster a vibrant sporting culture across the county.
Ruiru Stadium remains a key facility in the county’s sports development agenda, providing a venue for competitions and talent development. Ongoing improvement works at the facility are expected to enhance the experience of both athletes and spectators.
The tournament culminated in the presentation of trophies and cash prizes to top-performing teams following a series of competitive matches.
County officials said such initiatives are expected to strengthen grassroots sports development and provide a pathway for talented players to progress to higher levels of competition.
