Plans to map out unique tourism products through a standardised digital database

The Directorate of Tourism, in partnership with the State Department for Tourism and Wildlife, held a joint meeting aimed at identifying, documenting, and mapping out unique tourism products through a standardised digital database.
The consultative meeting brought together technical officers and sector experts to establish a unified methodology for geo-mapping and profiling key sites as part of a broader strategy to position Turkana as a competitive frontier destination.
Speaking at the meeting, the Director for Tourism Abdul Lomuria reaffirmed the county’s full support for the exercise, describing it as a milestone in unlocking Turkana’s rich heritage.

He cited the historical significance of the region, including the discovery of the Turkana Boy at Nariokotome, as a powerful anchor for heritage tourism.
“This process will help us tap into our cultural and natural wealth and present it to the world,” Lomuria said.
Elly Ekwee, the team lead for the State Department for Tourism and Wildlife, emphasized sustained collaboration to ensure comprehensive documentation of all Turkana’s tourism products.
Timeline Solution consultant David Uz said the new framework would streamline data collection and verification while ensuring system development is efficient and time bound.
“This inclusive approach will enhance accuracy and create a reliable digital platform for planning and promotion,” he noted, adding that the system would support informed decision-making for both public and private stakeholders.
Officials agreed to establish coordinated implementation teams and fields for Turkana’s tourism landscape on a global stage.

Present were officers from the State Department for Tourism and Wildlife including Robert Cheruiyot, Elizabeth Gitonga, among other officers from the Directorate of Tourism.
