Makuyu, Pioneer dominate Murang’a County games to secure regional slots

Makuyu and Pioneer Senior Schools emerged as the top performers at the Murang’a County Senior Schools Games after qualifying multiple teams for the Central Region championships following three days of intense competition at Makuyu Boys Senior School.

The regional championships, scheduled for July 9 at M-PESA Foundation Academy, will bring together top schools from across the region in football, volleyball, basketball and rugby sevens.

Makuyu delivered one of the strongest performances at the county games, qualifying in boys’ football, boys’ volleyball and boys’ rugby, while Pioneer secured regional slots in boys’ basketball and boys’ rugby.

In boys’ football, Gituru Senior School from Kandara Sub- County topped their pool with eight points, edging hosts Makuyu Boys on goal difference after both teams finished level on points.

Gituru maintained consistency throughout the group stages, while Makuyu impressed before their home supporters with disciplined performances that earned them a place in the knockout rounds.

Mugumo Senior, Kiriani Mixed and Karemaini Senior also mounted spirited campaigns but failed to secure qualification after inconsistent results during the group stage.

Makuyu recovered strongly in the knockout stage to book a place at the regional championships.

In girls’ football, St. Joseph Girls dominated the tournament, collecting a maximum 12 points from four matches to finish top of their group.

The team impressed with clinical finishing, solid defending and cohesive teamwork throughout the competition before sealing qualification for the regional games.

Gitugi Girls secured the second semi-final berth, while Ngararia Girls and Ngatho Senior exited after the group stage despite determined performances.

Volleyball also produced closely contested matches as schools battled for regional qualification.

Makuyu Boys and Matunda Senior earned the boys’ volleyball slots after consistent performances, while Ngararia Girls and Kamahuha Girls emerged among the leading teams in the girls’ competition through disciplined teamwork and effective attacking play.

Makuyu, Ngararia and Kahuho qualified to represent the county in the girls’ volleyball category.

In rugby sevens, Kigumo Bendera Senior joined Makuyu and Pioneer in qualifying for the boys’ regional competition.

Githunguri Girls, Nguthuru Girls and Muthithi Senior secured the girls’ rugby slots after impressive displays throughout the tournament.

In basketball, Pioneer booked a regional place in the boys’ category, while Kahuhia and Nginda qualified to represent Murang’a County in the girls’ competition.

The county games attracted schools from across Murang’a, with athletes competing for regional places in a tournament marked by competitive matches, teamwork and sportsmanship.

Attention now shifts to the regional championships, where the county’s representatives will seek to qualify for the national games. Teams are expected to use the remaining days to fine-tune their preparations ahead of the competition at M-PESA Foundation Academy.
