Safaricom partners with Machakos University to build Smart TVET college

Machakos University has taken a significant step towards strengthening technical and vocational education following the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a Smart Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) building, funded by the M-PESA Foundation at a cost of approximately KSh120 million.

The Smart TVET facility is expected to equip students with industry-relevant competencies while also opening up training avenues for community members, creating a direct link between education and employment opportunities in Machakos and beyond.

The three-storey Smart TVET once completed, will accommodate multiple lecture halls, administrative offices and staff workspaces, significantly enhancing the university’s capacity to offer technical and vocational education.

Prof. Joyce J. Agalo, the Vice Chancellor of Machakos University who spoke during the ground breaking commended the M-PESA Foundation and Safaricom PLC for investing in education and skills development, noting that the institution will not only benefit the University students but community as well.

“We commend the M-PESA Foundation and Safaricom PLC for investing in education and skills development. This institution will not only benefit our University students, but will also provide training opportunities for members of the surrounding community and contribute to local economic growth,” said the VC

General Manager of Safaricom PLC Coastal region, Jackson Mutua emphasized that expanding access to technical and vocational education is essential in equipping young people with practical skills, promoting innovation, entrepreneurship that respond to the changing demands of the labour market.

He affirmed that the project is expected to be completed in approximately 12 months, after which the university will have a modern facility dedicated to technical and vocational training.

Students who attended the ceremony welcomed the initiative, expressing optimism that the Smart TVET building would broaden learning opportunities and equip graduates with industry-relevant skills.

Also present was the Chairman of the University Council, Dr. Peter Maangi Matiambo, members of the university management, the project’s main contractor, members of the project committee and Machakos university students.
