Grief and shock have gripped residents of Embu Town after bodies of two young women were discovered floating in River Kapingazi in Matakari area in the outskirts of the town on Wednesday evening in a suspected murder case.
The naked bodies, which had already started decomposing, were found by a passer-by who immediately alerted authorities.
Within minutes, hundreds of shocked residents thronged the scene, struggling to catch a glimpse of the chilling sight.
Witnesses said the victims appeared to have been strangled before being dumped into the river.
Just a stone’s throw away from where the bodies were retrieved, there was a makeshift structure in a thicket that locals believe to be a hideout of criminals who may have committed the heinous act.
Several items were found including smart phones and clothes, some belonging to women.
However, tension flared as angry residents set the structure ablaze before police could retrieve items that may have been crucial to investigations surrounding the bizarre murders.
The bodies were moved to the Embu Level 5 Hospital mortuary as homicide detectives launched investigations and a manhunt for the suspected killers as well as the occupants of the makeshift structure.
Residents condemned the killings and demanded swift action and thorough investigations to bring the killers to justice.
“These girls were someone’s daughters. Whoever did this must face the full force of the law,” Joseph Njeru, a resident of Embu Town said.
Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) Embu Branch Chair, Mugo Mate, called for speedy investigations as he also asked security agencies to enhance security that has been deteriorating in the town in the recent past.
“Such acts are pointers towards the state of insecurity in Embu and we call upon security organs to be vigilant,” he said.
