Years of dusty amd muddy roads in Tinderet Sub-County are giving way to smoother rides as both the County Government of Nandi and the Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA) step up rehabilitation works.
Governor Stephen Sang’s administration has prioritized rural roads in a bid to open up farming areas. To this end, the County purchased graders, rollers, and tippers so as to get rid of reliance on contractors and this has enabled gravelling and grading of hundreds of kilometers of roads, in the entire County.
The County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Transport Eng. Michael Ogenga has emphasized that the roadworks now include drainage features such as culverts, box culverts, and erosion control measures.
He noted that many feeder roads in Tinderet previously washed away after just one rainy season, thus, wasting huge county resources. “By integrating drainage into every project, we are building durability into our roads,” he said.
Residents are already enjoying benefits as the newly completed 17-kilometre Taunet–Koromi–Cheboingong–Maraba road has cut travel time to markets and hospitals.
“This road will reduce maternal deaths because expectant mothers can now reach health centers on time,” said the Tindiret Member of County Assembly (MCA), Paul Letting.
On the national side, the Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA) has started the upgrade of the 24-kilometre Kebeneti–Tinderet Tea Estate–Maraba road.
The KeRRA Rift Valley Regional Director, Eng. Charles Kamau said the road will be upgraded to bitumen standard with asphalt layers, culverts, and solar street lighting. “This is a game-changer for both Nandi and Kericho counties,” he said.
Tinderet Member of Parliament (MP), Julius Melly, welcomed the move, saying he had lobbied for years for the inter-county corridor to be prioritized. “Our farmers, especially in tea estates, will finally move produce with ease,” he said.
With both county and national projects rolling out, residents say they can now look forward to better access to markets, schools, and hospitals after decades of neglect.
