The first wireless internet connection has been launched in Masalani town, Ijara Sub County in Garissa County following a public outcry on the absence of the vital service that will help area residents align themselves with the government’s digital economy agenda.
Thanks to a privately owned company, Darot internet which has hit ground by opening an office in Masalani town ready to start work of connecting residents with internet.
The coordinator of the company Osman Darot and Mahout Mohamed Gab disclosed that they were installing the wireless internet at a cost of Sh3000 connection fee and a monthly charge of Sh2000, targeting 6,000 connections in Masalani town.
A spot check by KNA showed that many homesteads had already been connected to the internet even before Darot and Gab pronouncements, the area being connected from Terabora Gumarey Muhamad Dahir estate to Bulla Gadud leading to Masalani town centre.
The company will stretch its service to a 42 kilometer radius on the far flung areas of Sangailu and Hulugho Sub counties near the Somalia.
Chairperson of the Masalani watchdog team Abdullahi Abdi, the former chairperson of the defunct of Ijara county council Mohamed Gure and Ijara youth leader Salah Yarrow said this is being the first intervention for residents to join the digital economy era.
The team has appealed to the government to connect the region with fiber optic cable internet connection.
They said internet connection improves people’s livelihoods as they explore the opportunity in eking a living.
Meanwhile, Ijara elders have called on the government to establish a Huduma centre in the area for residents to reach government services in their neighborhood.
Mr Gure said he usually travels for 48 kilometres to Hola town to access the Huduma centres services.
The internet connection has eased peoples’ burdens of using mobile data buddles which is expensive.
