Police seize illicit brews in Vihiga, Kakamega

A multi-agency security team from Vihiga and Kakamega counties led by Western Regional Police Commander Issa Mohammed has nabbed over 30,000 liters of molasses and 30 liters of chang’aa in a major crackdown of illicit liquor and drugs in the Kilingili area that borders the two counties.

In an interview with the Kenya News Agency in his official residence, Vihiga County Commissioner (CC), Peter Maina, confirmed that three suspects—two women and a man—were arrested during the operation.

Maina said the move comes ahead of 100 days of the Rapid Result Initiative (RRI) in the area, aimed at curbing drug and substance abuse, illicit brews, and criminal gangs in the region. The initiative will officially start Friday, following the recent president’s directive for an accelerated national response to alcohol and drug abuse in the country.

The CC cautioned local organized illegal groups, including the 42 brothers’ criminal gang, which has been terrorizing area residents, that they would soon be arrested and prosecuted in court.

He also issued a stern warning to motorcycle riders involved in some unbecoming boda boda culture, where they make unnecessary noise by playing loud music while participating in funeral processions.

At the same time, Maina clarified that Disco Matanga, which is very common in the Western region, remains outlawed, as criminals take advantage of the loud music played in funerals to terrorize residents.

The CC assured residents that the National Government Administrivia Officers (NGAO) will profile every event taking place, including funerals, and they will not hesitate to nab all those found engaging in criminal activities.

“As NGAO, we are also engaging in dialogue with residents, especially the youth, through our regular public barazas in a bid to reduce cases of drug abuse, illicit brews, and organized gangs in the county,” said Maina.
