NYS to upgrade over 700 kilometers of roads in Uasin Gishu

The County Government of Uasin Gishu is set to roll out an extensive road rehabilitation and upgrade programme targeting more than 700 kilometres of roads across 30 wards.

The initiative will be implemented through a partnership between the county government and the National Youth Service (NYS) under an agreement signed on December 10, 2025. The programme is part of a Rapid Results Initiative (RRI) aimed at improving road accessibility, especially in areas affected by heavy rains.

County officials said the NYS has adequate machinery and skilled manpower to deliver the project within the required timelines and standards.

On Tuesday, the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Roads, Transport and Public Works, Abraham Serem, alongside Chief Officer Geoffrey Tanui, convened a special project kick-off meeting with road engineers and inspectors to plan and agree on effective implementation strategies.

“Our main objective through this collective initiative is to rehabilitate and complete the roads before the onset of heavy rains. It is our wish that we succeed,” Serem said.

He disclosed that the county expects NYS to provide six graders, six excavators and 36 tippers to support the programme.

To ensure efficiency, the implementation teams will be divided into three lots, each assigned specific wards and machinery. Every lot will be equipped with 12 tippers, two excavators, two graders and one roller.

The first lot will cover Langas, Racecourse, Huruma, Kimumu, Kuinet/Kapsuswa, Kapsoya, Karuna Meibeki, Kapsaos, Moiben, Tembelio and Sergoit wards.

Lot two will serve Soy, Segero/Barsombe, Ziwa, Kipsomba, Mois Bridge, Kapkures, Kiplombe, Ng’enyilel, Kamagut and Tapsagoi wards.

The third lot will cover Kipkenyo, Kapseret, Megun, Ngeria, Tulwet/Chuiyat, Tarakwa, Ainabkoi/Olare, Cheptiret and Kaptagat wards.

Chief Officer Tanui said the Rapid Results Initiative is designed to rehabilitate roads that have been damaged or rendered impassable by heavy rains within the shortest time possible.

“We need to deliver the project within the shortest time possible. If a ward is allocated 20 kilometres, let us ensure the full 20 kilometres are completed,” Tanui emphasized.

The county government said the improved road network will enhance transport, trade and access to essential services across Uasin Gishu.
