Residents of Muhoroni Township estate in Kisumu County are counting heavy losses after a fire broke out on Thursday evening, destroying several houses and household property.
According to police report, the inferno destroyed several houses, most of them built using iron sheets, along with property belonging to the affected families.
The cause of the fire is yet to be established.
Muhoroni Sub-County Police Commander Fredrick Ombaka confirmed the incident. Fortunately, he said that no fatalities or injuries had been reported.
“The fire broke out shortly after 5:00 pm in one of the houses and quickly spread to adjacent structures, all made of timber and iron sheets,” David Masawa, a victim, narrated.
Masawa said he managed to escape to safety after his iron sheet living room caught fire suddenly.
The flames, fanned by strong winds, consumed household items, clothing, and personal documents, leaving nothing to be salvaged.
“The fire allegedly started at Masawa’s house. Due to strong wind, the fire spread and consumed other nine adjacent structures belonging to his neighbours and destroyed property of unknown value,” Ombaka stated.
Residents managed to put off the flames using buckets of water and sand, but nothing was salvaged.
The affected families are appealing for help as they come to terms with the sudden loss.
