Nyamira residents protest over withdrawal of world bank funds

A section of Nyamira residents is protesting following the withdrawal of World Bank support funds by the National Treasury, which cited alleged mismanagement of resources in the county.

Speaking at Konate shopping center in Nyamira County, the residents called out the area governor Amos Nyaribo to resign over the alleged mismanagement saying he was derailing development in the area.

The National Treasury had mid-December last year suspended two World Bank-financed projects following unexplained irregularities of approximately Sh22 million.

Leading the demonstration along the Konate -Nyamira route, a local politician, Duke Mbagi accused the governor of failing to utilize the donors fund transparently for various development projects including water and road construction.

He urged him to resign to give way for proper investigations to take place and appealed to the Members of County Assembly to resume sittings from recess and summon him to explain.

Mbagi noted that it was in public domain that around Sh22 million among other expenditure could not accounted for.

The amount, is said to be part of hundreds of millions extended to the devolved government as conditional grants to aid in the implementation of development works in the Departments of Land, Housing, and Physical Planning, as well as economic empowerment in the agriculture sector.

The monies were financed by the National Exchequer in collaboration with the International Development Association and the French Development Agency.

In response, Nyaribo was recently quoted in sections of the press alluding that no money was lost and that the only recorded problem, had already been resolved within the internal audit mechanisms.

He said the requisite responses to the audit queries had been submitted to the Auditor General, who was already in the know, by the time the communication about the suspension was being sanctioned at the county.
