Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka has challenged the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to restore public confidence by ensuring transparency in the Thursday by-elections.
Musyoka noted that IEBC remains among the least trusted public institutions, warning commissioners that failure to conduct credible elections would erode their legitimacy ahead of the 2027 General Elections.
“IEBC has a big responsibility. This is the lowest-rated institution in terms of public trust. If they do not conduct this election correctly, no one will believe they can preside over 2027. The bar has been set very high—either they get it right or they go home,” he said.
Mr Musyoka said this at a Malindi hotel after holding meetings with Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP)’s Magarini by-election candidate Stanley Karisa Kenga and senior opposition members to strategise on the Thursday mini-poll.
He urged the commission to disprove the opposition’s claims of bias and cautioned that any attempt to manipulate results would face legal consequences.
“We are collecting every piece of evidence. Justice has no limit. If they try to steal again, justice will have to be done. Kenya must be properly liberated,” Musyoka declared.
Turning his criticism to the government, the Wiper leader accused the administration of emboldening political “goons” and raised alarm over rising insecurity, citing an incident in which Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembea was attacked during a visit to Chuele.
“This government appears to believe in goonism. If they think goons will help them, they should know Kenyans will deal with them. We have policemen in this country, so why are goons being given weapons?” he posed.
Musyoka warned that intimidation tactics would only harden voter resolve.
“If this government continues with violence, Kenyans will come out in even greater anger and vote them out. Magarini will be a test case,” he said.
He also praised Kenyans on social media for exposing election-related incidents, pointing to a viral video showing a bus ramming into a kiosk in Mbere North.
“Kenyans on social media are doing a beautiful job. This is part of liberating our country,” he added.
Kirinyaga Senator James Kamau Murango alleged that some Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party operatives were still campaigning in Magarini constituency despite the fact that the official campaign period ended on Monday, singling out Kilifi MP Ken Chonga for allegedly conducting political mobilisation.
