Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communications and the Digital Economy William Kabogo has said the government will increase internet connectivity in public institution to improve service delivery.
Kabogo spoke in Kabartonjo Town in Baringo County during the launch of 106 kilometer Emining –Marigat –Kabarnet- Kabartonjo Fibre Backbone Link said the completion of the project will improve internet speed in public institutions and public spaces.
The CS reiterated that Kenya is among countries with access to high internet speed in the world, “next week we will be accessing internet with speed of between 30 to 40 MBPS here at the County Commissioner’s office, this is faster than even London City whose internet speed is very low.”
Kabogo called on Baringo residents to embrace government initiative like the universal Health access program and the Affordable Housing Program going on in every part of the country.
The CS said that the 106 kilometer project is part of government’s target to lay 100,000 kilometers fiber super highway in the country.
On his part Principal Secretary for ICT Eng. John Tanui said the ministry has connected 46 institutions in Baringo County and targets 186 more with the aim of improving service delivery.
“This new fiber link will ensure we have stable connection in Baringo and it will also be accessed by private telecommunication companies to improve their network to 4G and 5G in the region,” said the PS.
Tanui tipped the ICT sector as a key enabler in Kenya’s dream to move to first world economic status.
He added that internet connection will also enable public servants get accurate information and improve the quality of service offered to Kenyans with the use of data based decision making such as the e-citizen platform.
“We have put digital hubs across the county and all the TVET institutions have been equipped with not less than 100 computers to ensure the students are connected to the digital space,” said Tanui.
The event that was attended by County Commissioner Stephen Kutwa, Baringo North Member of Parliament Joseph Makilap saw the launch of internet connection to Kabartonjo Sub-County Hospital, Sub-County Registry as well as Kabartonjo Posta Office.
