The government on Thursday conducted a multi-agency operation in Igembe North Sub-County, Meru that led to the destruction of major chang’aa production dens in Ntunene and Antuambui wards.
The operation was led by Igembe North Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Martin Muhia, accompanied by the area OCPD Gerald Marando, as part of an ongoing effort to flush out illicit brewers, especially during the festive season.
During the raid at Kiani Kia Baimula village in the outskirts of Laare Market, officers uncovered several concealed pits where jerricans of muna (a by-product used in chang’aa production) had been buried.
The pits, according to officers, could only be detected through keen investigation and intelligence from members of the public.
Addressing the media during the operation, DCC Muhia said the exercise had resulted in the confiscation and destruction of illicit brews and equipment used in the illegal trade.
He briefly outlined the effects of the deadly brew on the community, noting that illicit brews have devastating impacts, including loss of lives, health complications, family breakdowns, increased poverty and insecurity, and reduced productivity in the community.
Items impounded from the scene included 62 jerricans of muna, 20 litres of ready chang’aa, and other brewing equipment.
Some of the items were retained as exhibits for court proceedings, while others were destroyed on site in the presence of residents and the media.
